Mentor Duties

Duties of a Legion mentor include the following:

30 days prior to release:
* Call Xcel Energy 1-800-895-4999 to begin service in mentee’s name. (Bill will help to establish residence for DPS.)
* Provide study guide to mentee for Texas driver’s license test
* Provide study guide to mentee for Texas driver’s license test
* Texas DMV Handbook (TX Driver’s Manual) Study course for study
can be found on mentee’s cell phone
* DMV address – 6592 Interstate 40 Access Road 806-376-2700

Activate the cell phone for mentee

Pick mentee up

Take mentee to his apartment

Take mentee to the first parole visit
* TDCJ Parole/Release Packet

Enroll parolee in Food Stamps (SNAP)

* Apartment Lease
* Electric Bill
* Birth Certificate
* SSN
* Release Packet

Take mentee to apply for Indigent Health Care

* Needed Items Include:
* TDCJ ID
* Lease Agreement
* Birth Certificate
* Food Stamp Verification
* Electric Bill or Letter of Introduction for Excel or The Legion Project

Provide Internet access for mentee to complete a required highway safety course online (may have to be done at mentor’s home or business)

* 5410 S. Bell (Luster Insurance) ask for Lanita and tell them Jim sent you
and you need a DPS form.

Schedule written driver’s license test online

Take mentee to DPS office for written driver’s test
* Needed Items Include:
* Parole Packet
* Birth Certificate
* Lease Agreement
* Food Stamp Verification

Schedule Driving Test Online

Take Mentee to DPS Office for Driving Test

Provide Internet Access for Mentee to Complete Texas Workforce Solution
* Can also be done in person at the offices. 3120 Eddy St.
* Create an account with the following:
* Name
* Password
* Date of Birth
* SSN
* Phone Number

Take Mentee to Texas Workforce Solution for an Interview
* 3120 Eddy St.

Obtain Psychiatric Medicines for Mentee (If Needed)
* Texas Panhandle Centers Behavioral & Developmental Health

Take Mentee to Open a Bank Account
* Needed Items Include:
* Driver’s License
* SSN
* Can use any bank of choice

Direct Mentee to Al-Anon Meetings

Meet with Mentee to Assist Him to get Involved in a Church Bible Study
